Flashback Jack
The band member who stood his ground on the stage to finish off the song a capella in a call-back number with the audience is a true professional; something not taught to “artists” today. He knew the audience was there to hear this song and was going to give them what they paid to see. Rick Springfield blew the roof off the Honda Center, engaging the crowd, razzing the crew, security staff, and even audience members, all in good fun. It really was a great time when he finished his set. He could easily have been brought back with an encore (too bad he wasn’t). The concert met and exceeded my expectations for the bands lined up to perform. However, the logistics were a bit rough. Even the artists were frustrated with the quality of the team supporting them. I was disappointed with the way the Sugar Hill Gang was rushed off the stage in the middle of their most well-known song, Rapper’s Delight. Particularly since everyone in the audience was engaged and having an absolutely amazing time with this group. The other bands were also on fire that night, except for The Fixx. They seemed to have missed the mark on what flashback means. They sang new songs to which most people couldn’t relate, although they did perform a few songs from back in the day. If they were performing for another occasion or venue, then people would understand why they would want to sing their new stuff. Considering the concert was promoted as a FLASHBACK, they needed to keep to the well-known stuff and sprinkle the set with one or two new songs. Also, keep in mind that they followed the Sugar Hill Gang, and their set was a complete letdown. It was as if they really didn’t want to be there and couldn’t care less if the audience responded well or not to their new songs. I LOVED this concert. I read somewhere Cristina Mariani may be retiring as a group, so it may be one of the last times to see this entire band performing together. Almost everyone on stage seemed to be a senior citizen or close to that age group, so I don’t know how many more times you will see these bands in concert. Certainly, you couldn’t beat the lineup – everyone sounded great, the bands were tight, and the singers’ voices were immaculate (no crappy synths or piped-in background vocals). Jack FM, keep these concerts going (but improve the stage personnel). If you line them up like this, then I will go to these concerts every time. (whispering) I wish that I had Jessie’s girl.
